2019/2020 is an incredibly exciting time for Nexus ICA. Why? We are launching two new degrees! In addition to our current courses, from September 2020 we will be running:

BA (Hons) Event Technology

At Nexus ICA, we’ve always known that what goes on behind the scenes is every bit as valuable as what takes place on stage. It’s why, back in 2007, we were one of the very first places to incorporate a live sound pathway into a popular music course; because we knew that when it comes to live music, the contribution of technicians is just as crucial as that of the musicians themselves.

We’ve now had over a decade of success in educating technicians. In that time our live sound students have become a crucial part of the Nexus ICA community, and many of them have gone on to establish long-lasting and rewarding careers in the industry. We couldn’t be prouder of them and what they’ve achieved. And as the saying goes, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ right? Well, in this case…wrong, actually.

You see, for a while now we’ve had dreams of something bigger; a course dedicated to Christians who wish to make a living within the live events industry—to broaden the scope of what we do, and to welcome lighting and video technicians into the fold alongside their live sound brethren. This is why we decided to launch our BA (Hons) Event Technology.

As well as providing comprehensive practical teaching in the areas of sound, video and lighting, we will educate our students in what it means to make a career in live events while ensuring they understand how their work as technicians should be rooted in scripture and the mandate that God has given to the church. We will do all this while still holding firm the values that makes a Nexus ICA such a unique place to study.

Nexus ICA Students & Staff with the team from SFL Group

If this wasn’t exciting enough, in order to deliver the course, we’ve partnered with SFL—one of the UK’s leading event solutions companies. They’ve provided PA and production for everyone from The Royal Albert Hall to Soul Survivor, and their latest venture is to work with Nexus ICA on delivering one of the most innovative courses within the industry. Students on our Event Technology degree can expect work experience on SFL projects and real-world opportunities to develop interview skills and gain careers advice from an industry perspective. Furthermore, SFL will ensure that Nexus ICA are always in possession of the most up-to-date equipment in the fields of audio, lighting and video.

Safe to say that we are incredibly excited! Want to find out more?

BA (Hons) Songwriting

We have a rich history of Nexus ICA students writing and producing incredible music, and in recent years this has only increased as we took active steps to providing more opportunities for our students to write songs and have them performed. Not least of these was when, two years ago, we decided that all of the songs in our annual Christmas shows would be written in-house by students. It was a decision that carried an element of risk, but each year we’ve been blown away by the quality of what was written. Why don’t you see for yourself? You can check out the soundtracks for each of these shows on Spotify or Apple Music.

Despite all this success, we knew we could take it further. And so, when we suggested to launch a Songwriting degree to the University of West London they were fully on board.

So, what will the degree look like? Well, the course is aimed at any aspiring songwriters, whether they want to be an artist, write songs for the Church, or work as a songwriter within the broader industry. It’s focused on developing the range of techniques, skills and approaches required to be a song writer. Throughout the degree students will receive expert tuition and practical experience in the areas of lyric writing, melody composition, prosody and form. They’ll also have lots of opportunities to perform their songs on stage, whilst building a comprehensive portfolio of recorded work.
